Most things people write in about have a short answer, so those are here first. If yours is not, the address at the bottom reaches a person.
Getting started
LedgerLeaf has no bank connection. It knows what you tell it, which means the first thing to do is enter what your accounts actually hold — once. From there it carries those balances forward through everything you log, so net worth keeps moving without being retyped.
The same account works on the web and on the phone. Sign in with the same email on both and you are looking at the same budget.
Why does a figure look wrong?
Almost always because something has not been logged. A balance the app worked out for itself is labelled as such wherever it appears, and every row says which balance it started from and how many entries it counted — so you can see exactly what it did. Entering today’s real balance reconciles it, and the difference is the spending that never got recorded.
Transfers between your own accounts are deliberately neither income nor spending. Paying a credit card settles an expense that was already counted when the card was charged; counting the payment again would double a month of card use.
Sharing a budget
A budget can be shared by invitation. An editor can add and change entries; a viewer can see everything and change nothing. Only the owner can delete the budget or remove people from it.
Notifications
The daily brief and the nudges to log are local to your phone — they are scheduled on the device, not sent from a server, and they carry figures that were accurate the last time anything changed. Turn either off in Settings, or in your phone’s own notification settings.
Your data
Everything you have entered can be exported as JSON from Settings on the web, at any time, without asking anyone. Deleting your account removes all of it immediately and cannot be undone — that control is in Settings on both the web and the phone.
What is stored, who can see it, and how long it is kept is set out in the privacy policy.
Something is broken
It helps enormously to know what you were looking at, what you expected, and what happened instead — plus whether it was the web app or the phone. Screenshots are welcome. Please do not send passwords; nobody here will ever ask for one.
